The heart of the Rhine Gorge, Boppard has a premier location right on the banks of the river. In all directions are historic towns, steep vine clad hills and dramatic castles which cling to the mountain tops and look down on the important waterway. All day long barges trundle up and down the river, often on-route from Switzerland to the mouth of the river in Holland. Visitors can relax in riverside cafés enjoying both the views and sipping the wonderful local wine.
The 4-star Bellevue Rhein hotel, Boppard has a premier location right in the centre of Boppard, overlooking the promenade and the river. It combines traditional service with modern luxury. Bedrooms have tea/coffee facilities and the hotel has a bar, restaurant, wine cellar and modern spa.
Day One - Departing West Wales, we make our way to Dover for our lunchtime crossing to Calais. We then continue to our overnight hotel near Liege.
Day Two - After breakfast we start our journey towards Boppard. But first we make a stop in the wonderful city of Cologne and get the first glimpse of the magnificent Rhine. This 2,000-year-old city spanning the Rhine River, is a landmark of High Gothic architecture set amid reconstructed old town, with the twin-spired Cologne Cathedral towering over the city. We then continue to our host town of Boppard.
Day Three - A full day of excursions awaits, starting with travel through the Moselle valley to Cochem. Renowned as one of the prettiest towns along the Moselle with its many fine buildings, quaint cottages, black & tan guild houses and winding streets, we will enjoy free time here to explore before continuing our tour visiting the enchanting wine village of Bernkastel- Kues. This ancient village has long been famous for its beautiful market squares and its wine-growing traditions.
Day Four - A day at leisure in Boppard. Relax and enjoy the hotel's facilities, stroll along the Rhine promenade and explore the bustling, historic streets with their stylish shops and cafés.
Day Five - We cross the Rhine and travel the short distance up to the Loreley Rock viewpoint. The rock is associated with the legend of a beautiful maiden who threw herself into the Rhine in despair over a faithless lover, who was then transformed into a siren who lured fishermen to destruction. We then continue to the Asbach visitors centre in Rüdesheim, for the chance to sample some of the finest Brandy from the area. Following this, we have ample free time to spend in this charming town with the famous Drosselgasse, (a lane lined with shops, taverns and restaurants for you to enjoy).
Day Six - Sadly, it’s time to say goodbye to Boppard, but our holiday is not over yet. We cross the Rhine and make our way to the riverside village of Konigswinter, located at the foot of the Drachenfels Mountain. Surrounded by vineyards, it boasts one of the most beautiful riverside promenades of the Rhine. Here we have the option to ride on Germany’s oldest rack railway, the Drachenfelsbahn (not included). This small cog railway runs up from the village to the famous Drachenfels rock, perched high above the Rhine offering fantastic views across the Rhine. After a few hours here we continue to our overnight hotel near Lille.
Day Seven - After an early breakfast we make our way towards Calais for our ferry Crossing to Dover. We then continue home to Pembrokeshire.
